Keith Hudson & Friends - The Hundson Affair
THE HUDSON AFFAIR:
This is an excellent retrospective of Keith Hudson's production work between the late sixties and middle seventies. Featuring more than 50 prime reggae cuts along with first-class packaging and sleeve notes, this has to be considered the definitive Hudson collection - although to be honest, there's not much competition out there. Setting out with Ken Boothe's great OLD FASHION WAY from 1969, THE HUDSON AFFAIR takes in early reggae classics from singers like Delroy Wilson, Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, and a virtual who's-who of foundation DJs, including Dennis Alcapone, Big Youth, U Roy and I Roy. There are also numerous instrumental and dub versions (check the brilliant MELODY MAKER), and plenty examples of Hudson's own "unique" microphone technique (a somber, not-always-in-tune blues wail from the lower registers), all of which make a convincing case as to why the producer was nicknamed the Dark Prince of Reggae. For the most part, this isn't the kind of breezy, rum and coke reggae promoted by the Jamaican tourist board. Instead, Hudson often prefers deep, voodoo-blues basslines accentuated by wheezing, spluttering organ parts and menacing guitar licks. There's no escaping the ominous overtones of THEME FROM SATAN SIDE, DARKEST NIGHT ON A WET LOOKING ROAD, or CLASS & SUBJECT, but there's also a lighter spiritual side to Hudon's work, as evidenced by Delroy Wilson's classic A PLACE IN AFRICA, and Hudson's own HEALING OF THE LAND and TORCH OF FREEDOM among others. There's an astonishing catalogue of music recorded here; a fantastic anthology that's long overdue. Really, you should buy this right away.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - AMMUNITION DUB COLLECTION
Bob Marley is an icon. Over two decades after his death, his music continues to thrill those who hear it, whether they are new fans or long-time followers. His music speaks to the common man and celebrates life. Whether you prefer the early recordings from the '60s or his 'hit period' in the '70s, there's rarely a dull moment in his catalog. This unique collection gathers a whole host of B-sides taken from the original Jamaican singles that featured early dub mixes of the vocal A-side. This is dub music that was just beginning to develop in Jamaica in the early 1970s. 24 tracks.

Studio One Sound Repost !
BBC Review
An exceptional track selection makes this one a winner.
David Katz 2012-06-22
Knowledge of Studio One is integral to an understanding of reggae. More than any other Jamaican production stable, Studio One was a crucial force during the 1960s and 70s, being the true home of ska and a hugely important site of early reggae.
London’s Soul Jazz began an association with Studio One founder Clement Dodd during the 1990s, helping to introduce this great music to a whole new audience. Dodd’s death interrupted the release schedule, but Studio One Sound shows that things are back on track. It’s a sublime set of little-known material from the label’s heyday.
It opens with Hip Hug, Slim Smith’s wonderful rock steady dance tune, which is followed by the extraordinary funk-roots of Good People, an exceptionally rare 1979 offering from Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus. Lord Tanamo’s Keep on Moving is an alternate take of Jackie Mittoo’s Totally Together, and The Wailing Souls’ Trouble Maker has the harmonic brilliance that made their name.
Elsewhere, Rita Marley’s Call to Me reminds of her early renown, and Johnny Osbourne’s All I Have Is Love is absolutely chilling. But the cheesy version of Smokey Robinson’s I Second That Emotion is pure novelty-value stuff – credited to The Martinis, it features Bajan singer Emile Straker.
More noteworthy highlights include Irvin Brown’s falsetto party tune, Run Come, The Heptones’ stunning Give Give Love, Jackie Opel’s ska-gospel The Lord Is With Me, and Ken Boothe’s heartbroken I Am a Fool. Larry Marshall’s take on The Gaylads’ There’s a Fire is full of emotion, and Freddie McGregor’s wonderful Homeward Bound is yet another standout, as are a few splendid instrumentals.
Liner notes by discographer Rob Chapman add context, albeit despite minor errors, and the sound quality is occasionally a bit muffled. Also, why a photo of Dennis Brown during his A&M phase was chosen for the front cover, when he does not appear on the disc, is something of a mystery. But the exceptional track selection, masterfully chosen by Oxman of Dub Vendor, makes this one a winner in every sense.

Bunny Lee - Jumping With Mr. Lee 1967-68
Another in Trojan Records' excellent Producer Series, Jumpin' With Mr. Lee spotlights Bunny Lee's rock steady production work from 1967-1968. Like the Joe Gibbs' entry in this series, The Reggae Train, Jumpin' With Mr. Lee includes everything from soulful vocal numbers to instrumentals. In contrast to Gibbs' heavy and full sound, though, Lee favored a leaner production style that featured steely horn and guitar work anchored by a buoyant rhythm section. Some of the vocal highlights include Slim Smith and the Uniques' "Love and Devotion" and Ken Parker's cover of the Sam Cooke hit "A Change Is Gonna Come." On the instrumental side there is the liquid-toned work of alto saxophonist Lester Sterling on "Sir Lee's Whip" (it's hard to say if this is in reference to the boss' studio manner or not) and Vin Gordon's eerily satisfying trombone workout on "Sounds and Soul." The high-quality sound throughout helps make these 18 solid tracks one of the better rock steady collections available.

Laurel Aitken - Voodoo Woman - Music for Moods : SOUL & SKA Sounds from the Sixties
REVIEW :
Pressure Drop records entitled ‘Voodoo Woman - Music For Mods: Soul And Ska Sounds From The Sixties’ with the emphasis mainly on soul and also, though not in the title, R&B.
Now before Jamaica found its own musical style in the shape of ska the big noise at the dancehalls of the late 50’s was American R&B and opener ‘Voodoo Woman’ is straight up Bo Diddly inspired, pounding piano, brass stabbing, jungle rhythm beating R&B and ‘I Believe’ with its lolloping gait is Professor Long Hair meets gospel. There are some nice soul tunes ‘Jamaica’ is a heartfelt, homesick sounding lament squarely aimed at the new immigrant population of the UK, who were perhaps questioning whether they’d done the right thing in leaving for these shores. ‘Sweet Precious Love’ on the other hand is a real upbeat foot stomper. On the ska front ‘You Can’t Stop Me From Loving You’ and ‘Don’t Play With Fire’ are good ol’ fashioned harmonica powered gems.
A lot of the songs have a feeling like you’ve heard it before with Laurel “borrowing” snippets and ideas long before the Gallagher brothers. ‘Last Night’ is an obvious cover / reworking of the Mar-Keys Atlantic hit while others such as ‘Bewildered Blues’ are more subtle as he steals a piano opening from Kerry Lester’s ‘Love Letters’ while ‘You Left Me Standing’ for some reason making me want to burst into a chorus of The Drifters ‘Save the Last Dance’.This is obviously a must for fans and collectors of Aitken, with almost all tracks new to CD,as it showcases another side to his prolific output, but also this should appeal to those who like tunes with a sixties groove that are more on the obscure side as well as to those of straight R&B. The album is well packaged with great informative sleeve notes by Mike Atherton. I mean I learnt a new great piece of trivia in that Laurels backing singers The Carols were just up the road from me in St Albans! A nicely put together album despite a dubious title, I do hate this compartmentalizing thing, although I can see where they are coming from.

Roy Panton And Yvonne Harrison With Friends
Roy Panton & Yvonne Harrison with Friends.
