Lennie Hibbert – More Creation (Studio One, 1971)

Hibbert was born in Mavis Bank, Jamaica in 1928. At the age of eight he began attending the Alpha School, where he joined the school band as a drummer. He left the school in 1944 and played in several small orchestras before joining the Military Band in 1946. While with the Military Band he taught himself to play the vibraphone. In 1955 he returned to Alpha as bandmaster,[2] his students including Floyd Lloyd and Vin Gordon. He worked as a live musician in jazz groups in the 1960s, and frequently worked with the Sound Dimension band, recording some of the best-known riddims for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. (Wikipedia)

Lennie Hibbert- Creation (Studio One, 1969)

Lennie Hibbert is that oddity in the history of reggae: he plays vibes and was the bandmaster of the Alpha School, where greats as Don Drummond learned to play. The 14 tracks, of which Creation and Village soul are featured twice, in slightly different versions, are a mixed bag of rock steady classics, jazzsoul tracks and even nyabbhingi drumming. Lennie's vibes play tastefully over the hot rhythms. One for the lovers of instrumentals and reggae diehards.

Lee Scratch Perry & The Upsetters - Cloak And Dagger

Lee Perry is a legendary Reggae producer who hit it big in England in October 1969 with a huge chart hit by his Upsetters band with 'Return of Django'. This was the time when the 'Skinheads' had adopted Reggae due to it's fast chugging danceable beat and the hits were mainly 'instrumental' tracks featuring either a horn (sax, trumpet or trombone) or an eerie hammond organ solo.

By 1971 things changed with Bob Marley, and Reggae became more 'roots' orientated with the subject matter changing to that of 'black conscience' and 'going back to Africa'. These subjects did not really interest the white youth of the U.K. and by 1973, both 'Trojan' and 'Pama' records (the two main Reggae exponent record companies in the U.K.) folded soon after.

The Lee 'Scratch' Perry CLOAK & DAGGER L.P. has a short story to tell because it was released in 'two different version issues in 1972'; - the Jamaican issue (featuring a different tracklisting) - and a seperate 'U.K.' issue originally released on the 'Rhino' Records label. The Jamaican issue (where only 300 were originally produced first time around) had the following tracks on it; A-1. Cloack & Dagger; 2. Sharp Razor; 3. Hail Stone; 4. Musical Transplant. 5. Liquid serenade; 6. Side Gate // B-1 Iron Claw; 2. Iron Side ; 3. Rude Walking; 4. Bad Walking. 5. Caveman Skank; 6. Pe-We Special. Sharp Razor, Iron Side and Bad Walking were 'Dub' instrumentals of their preceeding tracks and the album was hailed by some as being the first true 'Dub' album of the Reggae genre. In the U.K. the tracklisting was 'altered' and contained the following 12 tracks. A-1 Cloak & Dagger; 2. Hail Stone; 3. Musical transplant. 4. Liquid Serenade 5.Retail Love. 6. Creation. // B-1. Iron Claw; 2. Rude Walking. 3. Cave Man Skank. 4.Pe-We Special; 5. Sunshine Rock and 6. Wakey Wakey. Apart from the alternate tracklisting, the U.K. album was 'SPED-UP' so that the tracks had a 'faster tempo' to them than the 'slower' JA album release ones. It is probable that this was done for the U.K. market in order to continue the series of 'Upsetter' instrumental albums such as 'Return of Django', 'The Upsetter', 'Clint Eastwood', 'Many Moods of The Upsetter', 'Eastwood Rides Again' and so on. The U.K. version of 'Cloak & Dagger' is in fact the last true full Reggae instrumental album of The Upsetters as 'Blackboard Jungle' in 1973 was a full 'Dub' album. The JA issue of the 'Cloak & Dagger' album is found on the triple "DUB TRIP-TYCH" Double CD issued by Trojan, and is also recommended. My brother bought a copy in 1979, and I loved it ever since (I bought a re-issue copy in the 90's myself).

Incidentally, this ORCHID 'Original 1972 Mix' issue contains 2 tracks which were NOT issued on the original U.K. album (on RHINO) and they are entitled 'Bull Bay Skank' and 'Fish Tea' - which gives the impression that they are two previously unreleased and unavailable tracks. However, to avid followers of Upsetter music, these tracks are actually 'Serious Joke' (masquerading as 'Bull Bay Skank') and 'Ex-Ray Vision' (masquerading as 'Fish Tea') which are both from the 'Many Moods Of The Upsetter' L.P. from 1969 which comes as a dissapointing if one has them already (despite being brilliant tracks). These two added tracks also seem out of place on the rundown of tracks as the rest of the album was recorded and released in 1972.

The only other points of note are that 1; the sound is good - despite seeming to be taken from a vinyl source as their are a couple of cracks (but no pops) on some of the tracks. It is not as bad as that sounds, the tracks are highly enjoyable with good quality sound, and 2; there is no real information with regards to the album except from a repeat of the original back cover notes that appeared on the U.K. album.

It is a great release of a historical album that when originally released on vinyl didn't really sale well and disappeared without making a big impact thus making it an expensive collectors item at one point. This CD release brings all the original U.K. version tracks together on one disc (all 'sped-up' tracks from the original U.K. versions with the exception of 'Cloak & Dagger' and 'Creation' were previously available on two obscure releases entitled 'Heavy Manners' and 'Glory Dub' - but these have long been deleted and very hard to find.

This release by ORCHID is great if you are an avid 'UPSETTERS' fan and like their instrumental work between 1969 - 1972. If you are of a later style fan and like the 'flying cymbal' sound then this is not really for you.

Phyllis Dillon - Love Is All I Had (A Tribute To The Queen Of Jamaican Soul)

If you like classic soul music. Phyllis Dillon being addressed as the "Queen of Jamaican R&B" is very easily justified within the tracks on this CD. Every single one of them is a stand out- Jamaican influence is there, but with even a greater soul influence. When I first heard it, I went and dusted off some old Northern Soul albums afterward. The arrangments are great, the set of pipes on Phyllis are amazing...and I doubt this CD will ever leave my player.

Stand outs are "Make Me Yours" (this is better then Bettye Swann's version), "Nice Time" (which made the Trojan Rocksteady box set) and "Don't Touch me Tomato"...but her covers of classics like "Midnight Confession" and "Love the One Your With" are also outstanding. I can't say enough about this one- If you like Northern Soul or old Motown...and you like the sounds of the island, this is going to knock you out. Just buy the darn thing already...oh yeah, and skip "Eddie O Baby"- really the only turd in the whole thing.

Comment : Dub to the 1976 "Right Time" album by The Mighty Diamonds Recorded and Mixed at Channel One Recording Studio 279 Maxfield Ave, Kgn. 13

[cool review from OnTheWire Radio Lancashire)
This classic dub set from 1976 is amongst the first batch of reissues in Virgin's Front Line series. The rhythms, with one exception, match the Mighty Diamonds' masterpiece "The Right Time", and it is this connection alone which has established the reputation of "Vital Dub". The musicians are actually the Revolutionaries, Sly & Robbie et al, and the tunes were recorded and mixed down at Channel One by the Hookim Brothers. The mix is a largely a straightforward run through on the rhythms - which are peerless. But why the opportunity was not taken to run the songs and versions together is inexplicable, or even better to introduce some segues of the fine DJ versions to which the label must still have access. At least the original cover art is reproduced - an unconscious (sic) advertisement for over-indulging in top quality weed.

The Slackers - Close my eyes

Sin mas, aqui estan The Slackers.

Skanish sound Jamaican Influenced music from Spain 2012

*Excerpts from the album. Now available at Experimedia.net.* ...1964-1972. Trying to pinpoint the influence of Jamaican music on Spanish pop in the '60s and '70s, taking into account the sociopolitical situation in Spain, is like a script from Spanish director Luis García Berlanga. Despite Spanish public fervor for the suggestive, hot melodies coming from the Antilles, the Francoist censors tried to avoid any general lack of inhibition, minimizing the impact of the music's most enticing elements on Spanish soil. In the margins, apart from sterile regime-promoted national flamenco and sleep-inducing ballads, one could find few black elements in Spanish pop. At that time they were found in their Latin form: rumba and salsa and even sometimes something like Afrobeat. So it was necessarily the case that only the less suspicious artists had an opportunity to copy what they could get their hands on from that treasure island. The first vibrations that arrived to Spain from Jamaica, via England, came in the form of records. Given the difficulties, none of the artists collected here would have had access to the original recordings nor to Jamaican radio. Clearly then, their method of absorption and assimilation was that of musicians the world over: they heard it, they liked it, they copied it. And if any Spanish musician active in the 1960s claims to have set foot in Jamaica, it was all but impossible. At most, some Spanish pioneers were lucky enough to cross the Pond in the 1960s as cruise ship musicians. In any case, it's uncertain whether any of the players on this compilation came into contact with Jamaica by natural route. Equally uncertain is the occurrence of concerts by Jamaican artists in 1960s Spain. Therefore, what we have here is a captivating collection of tracks (mainly covers but also a few originals) which mix the enthusiasm and fascination of musicians who were captivated by the sounds coming from Jamaica. At times, the results they achieved fit within the expected sounds of the genre, but sometimes their efforts produced a mixture, whether intentionally or due to better intentions than skill, which gave Jamaican music a uniquely Spanish character. Most tracks reissued for the first time. Includes 4-page insert of informative liner notes by compiler.

Colectivo Ska Monterrey

Angelito (sax tenor)
Tefa (voz y sax tenor)
Alberto (sax alto)
Adry (bajo),
Agustín (guitarra)
Beto (piano)
Cheri (batería)
Daniel (percusiones)
